Dear NWLSD Families,
Last year, Northwest Local School District began partnering with Battelle for Kids and our community to develop NWLSD’s Portrait of a Graduate (POG). Unfortunately, our momentum came to a halt in March due to Covid-19. In an effort to start this process back up, we will be hosting all of our upcoming meetings virtually.
As you know we rolled out our strategic plan last year. In it, we identified our new mission, vision and belief statements as well as our 5 key goal areas for our district: (Culture of Trust, Financial Stability, Diversity and Equity, Social and Emotional Development and Student Achievement). POG is a key component of our student achievement goal area in the strategic plan. As we move into the second year of implementing our plan, we want to ensure that our student body is equipped with the academic content and the 21st Century skills they need to be contributing citizens in our world and to prepare them for their next steps in life, regardless of which path they choose.
The implementation of POG will be the first step in framing a new vision for our school system. When complete, our Portrait of a Graduate will be a North Star to guide our school district’s learning experiences and instructional design in and out of the classroom, this includes the learning experiences of all students Pre-K through 12th grade. In January, we will begin meeting with parents, staff, board members, communities of faith, business and community leaders, policy makers, social service agencies, educators, universities and students to learn the types of 21st Century skills that our stakeholders want our students to excel in. There are numerous 21st Century skills, but a few include things like: adaptability, effective communication, problem solving, leadership, empathy, open mindedness, integrity and dependability. Now, more than ever, learning experiences must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but they must also foster the 21st Century skills that our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.
Our team of stakeholders will meet once per month starting in January, and will convene throughout the month of April. The virtual meetings will be held on the following dates: January 13, February 11, March 16 and April 14.
